MAPPA at CAA 2013, Perth (AUS)

MappaProject will take part to CAA 2013, with 2 papers:

Estimation of archaeological potential with a page rank based predictive model: The urban area of Pisa

Author(s): Francesca Anichini, Nevio Dubbini, Fabio Fabiani, Gabriele Gattiglia
Schedule: Tuesday 26th 13:30 – 14:00

We present the analysis of multi-faceted, GIS managed data for determining the archaeological potential of the urban area of Pisa (www.mappaproject.org). The identification of relations among finds is a key issue for the data mining in archaeological interpretation process: spatial and functional organization levels allow only some configurations of parameters defining the potential. The page rank model is applied, because the criteria for assigning importance to web pages by search engines are based on relations, also. Procedure: categorization of finds; application of page rank, taking into account the dependence on the organization levels of the area of influence of finds.

Big (archaeological) data and mathematical predictive models

Author(s): Nevio Dubbini, Gabriele Gattiglia
Schedule: Thursday 28th 11:40 – 11:50

The last 20 years have seen two trends in data storage: digitalization, and usability of data in different places and through different devices. This has facilitated the production of huge quantities of data, and encouraged open data archives. The only way of analyzing large quantities of digital data is through automatic methods. When the task is prediction, moreover, abstract (mathematical) models are needed. Many ‘social’ fields of study have welcomed useful applications of mathematics: economics, medicine, social networks. The origin of mathematical shape theory was an archaeological problem. Here, we present applied mathematical theories potentially useful for archaeological predictive modelling.

Open Data survey
